Have you ever wondered about the story behind 'Blaydon Races', the world famous Geordie anthem? And just who were the keelmen? And where did north east coal mining begin? Who were 'Crowley's Crew'?
This recording tells of the remarkable history, in song, of the Blaydon, Winlaton and Stella area of Tyneside in north east England.
This very locality sprouted the seeds of the industrial revolution, saw one of the earliest applications of a comprehensive social welfare scheme for employees, the birth of 'the working class' as well as being the location of the 'Blaydon Races'. Hear the true stories about these things and much more. All sung in an intimate, warm style, in natural clear dialect, with accompaniment by combinations of acoustic guitar, banjo, ukulele and contributions by fiddle player Stewart Hardy on six tracks.
